Italian mafia move in to profit from L'Aquila earthquake
Organised crime syndicates have moved into the central Italian region devastated by this month's earthquake and are looking to profit from the reconstruction of the area, according to the head of parliament's anti-mafia commission. Giuseppe Pisanu told an Italian magazine that he was putting together a group of experts to help local authorities deal with mafia-related rebuilding corruption. The April 6 quake levelled or heavily damaged parts of L'Aquila and the surrounding Abruzzo region. Some government officials have estimated that €12bn (£10.6bn) will be needed for reconstruction.
